I am OBSESSED with scented candles (actually, scented anything. Fragrance is one of my “things”)!
Over the last few years, I have made it my business to steer clear of perfumes that are toxic (those with artificial fragrances), as research shows they could be detrimental to one’s health. What I did not realize is that the same can be said for candles which contain artificial fragrance and toxic waxes. So, with my newly acquired knowledge, I cleaned out my pretty extensive candle collection (I burn candles almost every day in my house so this was no easy task!) and decided to look for healthy candle options.
After a lot of research, about five years ago I came across a candle company called Keap. They are NY based, and from start to finish, they seem like they are doing everything right to make candles which are healthy for the customer, the planet and beautiful for the home. Their candles are made with coconut wax, cotton wicks and natural fragrances. But, do they smell good?
A while back on Keap’s website, I learned their limited edition January scent for that year was named “Library”. As a certified librarian, English teacher, and avid reader, I knew I had to give this candle a try. It took me about two seconds to order their sampler pack (12 tea light candles for $24). Luckily, the library scented sample was included! I loved it and ordered a full size.
When it arrived, I was immediately impressed by the packaging and the fact that the candle came in a reusable glass (spoiler alert: I now have about eight, as I subscribed to Keap and therefore received a number of candles since my first purchase.
All of the scents I have received were amazing. My favorites are Canyons (described as standing beneath a vast desert sky, and I agree), Green Market (described as a stroll through a farmer’s market. I’ll add that it smells like clean lettuce and vegetables in a good way. Very springy!), Northlands (linger in the forest of firs-perfect for Christmas!), and Wood Cabin, the original scent. It smells like a fireplace in a cabin in the woods. So cozy! If you’re into “beachy scents” then Waves will do it for you. Wild Figs is another great scent. It has a berry vibe, but not too sweet.
I’m not sure if any candle can claim to be 100% non-toxic (I mean, you ARE burning something!), but Keap candles are seemingly much better than candles one might buy at a local Target or Yankee Candle and the scents are much more elegant. So, go ahead, light that fire and burn, baby, burn!
